João Paulo II , nascido Karol Józef Wojtyła , foi o papa e chefe da Igreja Católica de 16 de outubro de 1978 até à data de sua morte. Teve o terceiro maior pontificado documentado da história, liderando por 26 anos, 5 meses e 17 dias, depois dos papas São Pedro, cujo pontificado durou cerca de 37 anos, e Pio IX, que liderou por 31 anos. Foi o único Papa eslavo e polaco até a sua morte, e o primeiro Papa não italiano desde o neerlandês Adriano VI, em 1522.João Paulo II foi aclamado como um dos líderes mais influentes do século XX. Teve um papel fundamental para o fim do regime comunista na Polónia e talvez em toda a Europa, bem como significante na melhora das relações da Igreja Católica com o judaísmo, Islã, Igreja Ortodoxa, religiões orientais e a Comunhão Anglicana. Apesar de ter sido criticado por sua oposição à contracepção e a ordenação de mulheres, bem como o apoio ao Concílio Vaticano II e sua reforma das missas, também foi elogiado.Foi um dos líderes que mais viajaram na história, tendo visitado 129 países durante o seu pontificado. Sabia se expressar em italiano, francês, alemão, inglês, espanhol, português, ucraniano, russo, servo-croata, esperanto, grego clássico e latim, além do polaco, sua língua materna. Como parte de sua ênfase especial na vocação universal à santidade, beatificou 1340 pessoas e canonizou 483 santos, quantidade maior que todos os seus predecessores juntos pelos cinco séculos passados. Em 2 de abril de 2005, morreu devido à sua saúde débil e o agravamento da doença de Parkinson. Em 19 de dezembro de 2009, João Paulo II foi proclamado "Venerável" pelo seu sucessor papal, o Papa Bento XVI. Foi proclamado Beato em 1 de maio de 2011, pelo Papa Bento XVI na Praça de São Pedro no Vaticano. Em 27 de abril de 2014, numa cerimônia inédita presidida pelo Papa Francisco, e com a presença do Papa Emérito Bento XVI, foi declarado Santo juntamente com o Papa João XXIII; sua festa litúrgica celebra-se no dia 22 de outubro.
