Judith Butler é uma filósofa pós-estruturalista estadunidense, uma das principais teóricas da questão contemporânea do feminismo, teoria queer, filosofia política e ética. Ela é professora do departamento de retórica e literatura comparada da Universidade da Califórnia em Berkeley . Desde 2006 Judith Butler atua como Hannah Arendt Professor de Filosofia no European Graduate School , Suíça.

Butler obteve seu Ph.D. em filosofia na Yale University em 1984, e sua dissertação foi publicada como Subjects of Desire: Hegelian Reflections in Twentieth-Century France. Em fins da década de 1980, entre diversas designações de ensino e pesquisa , ela envolveu-se nos esforços de crítica ao estruturalismo presente na teoria feminista ocidental , questionando os "termos pressuposicionais" do feminismo vigentes.

Judith Butler assume também genealogicamente os preceitos de autores/as que trabalham com o giro linguístico, tanto da escola inglesa quanto da francesa , e adota algumas posturas da fenomenologia existencialista de Sartre e Merleau-Ponty. Butler aponta a falsa estabilidade da categoria mulher e propõe buscar um modo de interrogação da constituição do sujeito que não requeira uma identificação normativa com o 'sexo' binário.Seus trabalhos mais recentes focam a filosofia judaica, centrando-se em particular nas "críticas pré-sionistas da violência estatal."

“Se os atributos de gênero não são expressivos mas performativos, então constituem efetivamente a identidade que pretensamente expressariam ou revelariam. A distinção entre expressão e performatividade é crucial. Se os atributos e atos do gênero, as várias maneiras como o corpo mostra ou produz sua significação cultural, são performativos, então não há identidade preexistente pela qual um ato ou atributo possa ser medido: não haveria atos de gênero verdadeiros ou falsos, reais ou distorcidos, e a postulação de uma identidade de gênero verdadeira se revelaria uma ficção reguladora. Gender Trouble: Feminism and the Subversion of Identity

“O que significa exatamente inverter a narrativa causal de Freud e pensar as disposições primárias como efeitos da lei? No primeiro volume de A História da Sexualidade, Foucault critica a hipótese repressiva por ela pressupor um desejo original (não "desejo" nos termos de Lacan, mas gozo) que conserva integridade ontológica e prioridade temporal em relação à lei repressiva. O desejo em questão assume o significado de recalcado na medida em que a lei constitui sua estrutura de contextualização: na verdade, a lei identifica e faz vigorar o desejo recalcado como tal, dissemina o termo e, com efeito, cava o espaço discursivo para a experiência constrangida e linguisticamente elaborada chamada "desejo recalcado".”
