James Mercer Langston Hughes foi um poeta americano, ativista social, novelista, dramaturgo e colunista para Joplin, Missouri.

Ele foi um dos primeiros inovadores da então nova forma de arte literaria chamada poesia-jazz. Hughes é mais conhecido como um dos líderes do movimento "harlem renaissance". Ele escreveu sobre o famoso período em que "o negro estava na moda", o qual depois foi parafraseado para "quando Harlem estava na moda".
