Joseph Priestley foi um teólogo, clérigo dissidente, filósofo natural, educador, teórico e político britânico que publicou mais de 150 obras. A ele normalmente é creditada a descoberta do oxigênio, apesar de Carl Wilhelm Scheele e Antoine Lavoisier também a reivindicarem, por ter Priestley escondido a descoberta do novo gás.Durante sua vida, a considerável reputação científica de Priestley baseou-se em seu invento da "água carbonatada", seus escritos sobre a electricidade, e sua descoberta de vários "ares" , sendo a mais famosa dentre suas descobertas o "ar deflogisticado" . No entanto, sua determinação em defender a Teoria do flogisto para rejeitar o que passaria a ser a Revolução Química, eventualmente deixava o invento oculto no interior da comunidade científica.
A ciência de Priestley foi sempre associada a sua teologia, e ele tentou consistentemente unir racionalismo iluminista com o teísmo cristão. Em seus textos de metafísica, tentou combinar teísmo, materialismo, e determinismo, um projeto que tem sido chamado de "audacioso e original". Ele acreditava que uma compreensão adequada do mundo natural deveria promover o progresso humano e, talvez, ter como consequência o evento dos Cristãos do Milênio. Priestley, que acreditava firmemente no livre e aberto intercâmbio de ideias, defendia a tolerância religiosa e igualdade de direitos para os religiosos dissidentes, o que também o levou a participar do unitarismo na Inglaterra. A natureza controversa de suas publicações, combinada com o seu apoio direto à Revolução Francesa, suscitou suspeitas governamentais; ele acabou por ser obrigado a fugir para os Estados Unidos após os distúrbios de Birmingham, em 1791.
Como sábio e professor, ao longo de sua vida também fez contribuições significativas para a pedagogia, incluindo a publicação de uma obra em gramática inglesa e a invenção da historiografia moderna. Estes escritos educacionais foram uma das suas mais populares obras. Foi a sua obra de metafísica, no entanto, que teve a influência mais duradoura: filósofos de destaque, incluindo Jeremy Bentham, John Stuart Mill, Herbert Spencer, creditaram-na entre as fontes primárias para o utilitarismo.
