Ellen Gold White foi uma escritora cristã americana, tida como profetiza pelos membros da Igreja Adventista do Sétimo Dia , denominação cristã que teve forte participação, porém, ela não foi a fundadora desta denominação religiosa. Os adventistas consideram Ellen G. White uma profetisa contemporânea, embora ela mesma nunca tenha reivindicado para si esse título. Os adventistas acreditam que Ellen White teve o "Dom de Profecia" - pois segundo eles, podem prová-lo. , como descritos em Apocalipse 12:17 e 19:10. A base dessa crença, de acordo com a interpretações do adventismo, está no fato do Novo Testamento apontar que nos últimos dias os cristãos teriam novamente o "dom de profecia" para orientar a igreja. .

Os escritos de Ellen White são restauracionistas e se esforçam para mostrar a mão de Deus guiando os cristãos ao longo da história. Nos seus livros, evidencia a existência de um conflito cósmico sendo travado na terra entre o bem e o mal . Esse conflito é conhecido como “o grande conflito” e foi fundamental para o desenvolvimento da teologia adventista.

Ellen White, que também é conhecida como irmã White pelos adventistas, foi uma das líderes que fundaram o movimento adventista do sétimo dia, ao lado do seu marido, Tiago White e de um amigo do casal: Joseph Bates.

A irmã White foi uma figura controversa em seu tempo, gerando ainda hoje muitas discussões, especialmente entre outros grupos cristãos, assim como de pessoas de outras religiões. Ellen afirmou ter recebido uma visão logo após o Grande Desapontamento Milerita. Num contexto onde muitas outras pessoas alegavam também ter recebidos visões, ela era conhecida por sua convicção e fervorosa fé. Randall Balmer, a descreveu como "uma das figuras mais vibrantes e fascinantes da história da religião americana." Já Walter Martin afirmou que ela era "uma das personagens mais fascinantes e controversas do seu tempo a aparecer no horizonte da história religiosa." Ellen White é a autora feminina mais traduzida de não-ficção na história da literatura norte-americana, bem como o mais traduzido autor de não-ficção americana de ambos os sexos. Seus escritos tratam de teologia, evangelização, vida cristã, educação e saúde . Ellen também promoveu a criação de escolas e sanatórios.

Durante sua vida, ela escreveu a mão mais de 5 mil artigos e 40 livros, totalizando mais de 100 mil paginas. Hoje em dia, graças as compilações feitas de seus manuscritos, mais de 100 títulos estão disponíveis em Inglês e 52 em português.
