Citações Ray Charles

„É melhor viver cada dia como o último, porque um dia você vai estar certo.“

—  Ray Charles
You better live every day like your last because one day you're going to be right. citado em "Wisdom for the Soul of Black Folk" (2007) por Larry Chang and Roderick Terry, p. 365

„You got to set your mind right and the rest will come to you naturally. No restrictions, no hang-ups, no stupid rules, no formalities, no forbidden fruit — just everyone getting and giving as much as he and she can.“

—  Ray Charles
Context: Women anchor me. They're there when I need them. They're sensitive to me, and I'm sensitive to them. I'm not saying I've loved that many women. Love is a special word, and I use it only when I mean it. You say the word too much and it becomes cheap. But sex is something else. I'm not sure that there can ever be too much sex. To me, it's another one of our daily requirements — like eating. If I go twenty-four hours without it, I get hungry. Sex needs to be open and fun, free and happy. It's whatever you make it, and I try my hardest to create situations where me and my woman can enjoy ourselves — all of ourselves — without our inhibitions getting in the way. You got to set your mind right and the rest will come to you naturally. No restrictions, no hang-ups, no stupid rules, no formalities, no forbidden fruit — just everyone getting and giving as much as he and she can. For the Love of Women, p. 239

„Do it right or don't do it at all.“

—  Ray Charles
Context: Do it right or don't do it at all. That comes from my mom. If there's something I want to do, I'm one of those people that won't be satisfied until I get it done. If I'm trying to sing something and I can't get it, I'm going to keep at it until I get where I want it. Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel (1998)

„You better live every day like your last because one day you're going to be right.“

—  Ray Charles
As quoted in Wisdom for the Soul of Black Folk (2007) by Larry Chang and Roderick Terry, p. 365

„Affluence separates people. Poverty knits 'em together.“

—  Ray Charles
Context: Affluence separates people. Poverty knits 'em together. You got some sugar and I don't; I borrow some of yours. Next month you might not have any flour; well, I'll give you some of mine. That's how my band made it. We swam through a lot of shit together, we swallowed a lot of pride, but we managed to do what we needed to do. Roughing It, p. 155

„I was born with music inside me.“

—  Ray Charles
Context: I was born with music inside me. That's the only explanation I know of, since none of my relatives could sing or play an instrument. Music was one of my parts. Like my ribs, my kidneys, my liver, my heart. Like my blood. It was a force already within me when I arrived on the scene. It was a necessity for me — like food or water. Home, p. 8

„Music is nothing separate from me. It is me.“

—  Ray Charles
Context: Music is nothing separate from me. It is me. I can't retire from music any more than I can retire from my liver. You'd have to remove the music from me surgically — like you were taking out my appendix. Little Bit of Soul p. 307

„I just want to make my mark, leave something musically good behind. If it's a big record, that's the frosting on the cake, but music's the main meal.“

—  Ray Charles
Context: Music has been around a long time, and there's going to be music long after Ray Charles is dead. I just want to make my mark, leave something musically good behind. If it's a big record, that's the frosting on the cake, but music's the main meal. As quoted "Words of the Week" in Jet magazine, Vol. 64, No. 6 (25 April 1983), p. 40

„But now if I can wrap myself up in that song, and when that song gets to be a part of me, and affects me emotionally, then the emotions that I go through, chances are I’ll be able to communicate to you. Make the people out there become a part of the life of this song that you’re singing about. That’s soul when you can do that.“
