Donald Henry Rumsfeld é um empresário e político norte-americano. Ele serviu como o 13º Secretário de Defesa dos Estados Unidos de 1975 a 1977 durante a presidência de Gerald Ford, e também como o 21º Secretário entre 2001 e 2006 sob o presidente George W. Bush. Além disso, Rumsfeld serviu quatro mandatos na Câmara dos Representantes pelo estado de Illinois de 1963 até 1969, foi diretor do Escritório de Oportunidades Econômicas entre 1969 e 1970, representante norte-americano na OTAN de 1973 a 1974 e Chefe de Gabinete da Casa Branca de 1974 a 1975.

Rumsfeld estudou na Universidade de Princeton, se formando em 1954 em ciência política. Ele serviu na marinha por três anos e então fez campanha para deputado federal por Illinois, vencendo em 1963 aos trinta anos de idade. Na Câmara dos Representantes, foi um dos patrocinadores do Ato de Liberdade de Informação. Rumsfeld aceitou relutantemente em 1969 a nomeação do presidente Richard Nixon para ser o diretor do Escritório de Oportunidades Econômicas. Depois disso ele foi nomeado representante dos Estados Unidos na OTAN. Em 1974 foi chamado de volta para Washington, D.C. a fim de ocupar o cargo de Chefe de Gabinete de Gerald Ford, pedindo para o presidente vetar uma expansão do seu Ato de Liberdade de Informação. Rumsfeld foi então nomeado por Ford como Secretário de Defesa.

Ford perdeu as eleições de 1976 e Rumsfeld voltou para a vida particular, sendo nomeado presidente da corporação farmacêutica G. D. Searle & Company, tempo em que conseguiu a legalização do aspartame. Posteriormente foi nomeado presidente da General Instrument de 1990 a 1993, e da Gilead Sciences entre 1997 e 2001.

Rumsfeld foi recomendado no final de 2000 pelo vice-presidente Dick Cheney para a posição de Secretário de Defesa, sendo nomeado em janeiro pelo presidente George W. Bush. Durante seu mandato ele foi uma voz neoconservadora, neoliberal e um dos principais responsáveis por reestruturar as forças armadas no século XXI. Rumsfeld foi crucial ao planejar a resposta dos Estados Unidos aos ataques de 11 de setembro de 2001, incluindo duas guerras: a do Afeganistão e a do Iraque. Além das estratégias de guerra, seu período no cargo tornou-se controverso pelos escândalos de tortura e abuso de prisioneiros na Prisão de Abu Ghraib, Iraque. Rumsfeld foi gradualmente perdendo seu apoio político enquanto as guerras continuavam sem fim, com ele renunciando do cargo no final de 2006. Wikipedia
