Ovadia Yosef foi um rabino sefardita de Israel nascido no Iraque. Foi um rabino haredi, acadêmico talmúdico e reconhecida autoridade da Halachá . Foi também uma autoridade entre os rabinos sefarditas e indiscutível líder espiritual do partido político Shas desde a década de 1980. Era altamente reverenciado pelas comunidades judaicas ortodoxas pelo mundo, especialmente pelos sefarditas e mizrahim por seu conhecimento da Torá.
