Man Ray, nascido Emanuel Rudzitsky , foi um pintor, fotógrafo e cineasta anarquista norte-americano, importante figura do dadaísmo em Nova York e, depois, do surrealismo em Paris.

Foi um dos nomes mais importantes do movimento da década de 1920, responsável por inovações artísticas na fotografia. Muda-se na infância para Nova Iorque. Estudante de arquitectura, engenharia e artes plásticas, inicia-se na pintura ainda jovem.

Em 1915 conhece o pintor francês Marcel Duchamp, com quem funda o grupo dadá nova-iorquino. Em 1921 contacta com o movimento surrealista na pintura. Trabalha como fotógrafo para financiar a pintura e, com a nova atividade, desenvolve a sua arte, a raiografia, ou fotograma, criando imagens abstratas mas com a exposição à luz de objetos previamente dispersos sobre o papel fotográfico.

Como cineasta, produz filmes surrealistas, como L'Étoile de Mer , com o auxílio de uma técnica chamada solarização, pela qual inverte parcialmente os tons da fotografia.

Muda-se para a Califórnia em 1940, para explorar as possibilidades expressivas da fotografia. Aí dá aulas sobre o tema. Seis anos depois, retorna a França. Em 1963 publica a autobiografia Auto-Retrato.

Context: There is … your high bridge in Pasadena from which every once in a while someone jumps off, committing suicide. There is no question of removing the bridge. Context: l paint what cannot be photographed, and l photograph what l do not wish to paint. lf it is a portrait that interests me, a face, or a nude, I will use my camera.
