É casado desde dezembro de 1999 com Matilde d'Udekem d'Acoz, com quem tem quatro filhos: Isabel, Duquesa de Brabante e sua herdeira aparente, o príncipe Gabriel, o príncipe Emanuel e a princesa Leonor.
