Escreveu Black Beauty para traduzir os sentimentos e contar a história deste cavalo. É do seu ponto de vista que nos apercebemos do sofrimento da adaptação a um freio, de carregar um fardo pesado por uma subida íngreme ou de estar muitas horas ao frio.

Anna Sewell criticava o uso da gamarra nos cavalos, por ser um acessório que os faz sofrer.
