William Tyndale foi um padre protestante e acadêmico inglês, mestre em Artes na Universidade de Oxford. Traduziu a Bíblia para uma versão inicial do moderno inglês. Seu objetivo era fazer o Novo Testamento um livro tal que "todo menino de arado" pudesse lê-lo e se tornasse mais conhecedor das Escrituras que o próprio clero. Apesar de numerosas traduções para inglês, parciais ou completas, terem sido feitas a partir do século VII, a Bíblia de Tyndale foi a primeira a beneficiar da imprensa, o que permitiu uma ampla distribuição.

Tyndale estudou as escrituras e começou a defender as teses da Reforma Protestante, muitas das quais eram consideradas heréticas, primeiro pela Igreja Católica que o perseguira e depois pela Igreja Anglicana. As traduções de Tyndale foram banidas pelas autoridades e o próprio Tyndale foi queimado na fogueira em 1536 em Vilvoorde , na atual Bélgica, sob a instigação de agentes de Henrique VIII e a Igreja Anglicana. Suas últimas palavras foram, "Senhor, abre os olhos ao rei da Inglaterra", o que de fato aconteceu anos depois.

Encontra-se sepultado em William Tyndale Park, Vilvoorde, Brabante Flamengo na Bélgica. Wikipedia
