No Reino Unido popularizou-se a alcunha de The Special One depois de se auto intitular desse modo na sua primeira entrevista como treinador do Chelsea. Em Itália ficou conhecido como Lo Speciale e em Espanha como El Especial.

Em 10 de janeiro de 2011, foi eleito pela FIFA o melhor treinador do mundo, relativamente à época de 2010.
