Edward Osborne Wilson é um entomologista americano e biólogo conhecido por seu trabalho com ecologia, evolução e sociobiologia. Wilson é especialista em formigas, em particular seu uso de feromônios para comunicação. Também é famoso por iniciar o debate da sociobiologia, uma das maiores controvérsias científicas do final do século XX, quando sugeriu em seu livro Sociobiology: The New Synthesis que o comportamento animal pode ser estudado utilizando-se uma abordagem evolutiva. Ele também é creditado por trazer o termo biodiversidade a público.

As várias honrarias científicas e conservacionistas de Wilson incluem o prêmio Crafoord em 1990, uma Medalha Nacional de Ciências dos Estados Unidos em 1976, e dois Prémio Pulitzer de Não Ficção Gerals. Em 1995, foi considerado pela revista Time como uma das 25 pessoas mais influentes da América.

Nasceu em Birmingham, Alabama, nos Estados Unidos, ganhou o título de "escoteiro águia", graduou-se na Universidade do Alabama, e recebeu seu doutorado de filosofia da Universidade de Harvard. Wilson recebeu um D.Sc. do Bates College em 1996.

A partir de 2007, ele é o Pellegrino University Professor de Pesquisa em Entomologia do Departamento de Biologia Evolutiva e Organismo na Universidade de Harvard e membro do Comitê de Investigação Cética. Ele é o Laureado Humanista da Academia Internacional de Humanismo.
